SA 8000, or Social Accountability 8000, is an international certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain, and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace. It was established by Social Accountability International (SAI) in 1997 as the first auditable social certification standard for decent workplaces, across all industrial sectors.
The main aim of SA 8000 is to ensure ethical treatment of workers across the global supply chain. This standard is based on the principles of international human rights norms as described in International Labour Organization conventions, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
